A Longing for Belonging

God's Kindness Quest Series

For love and acceptance, I fervently long

Perhaps to this new group I’ll truly belong

They appear nice enough, as I sit idle and listen

Do they have what I’ve been missin'

No interaction between us; it’s as if I’m invisible

Feeling overlooked, unworthy, and miserable

Off again on this journey to find

People who love, accept, and are kind

From group to group, I continue to roam

Elusive is the place called home

Tried drugs, alcohol, sex, social media and the like

Stuck going nowhere on that stationary bike

Where, oh where, do I fit in

Feel lost, lonely and engulfed in sin

Dropped to my knees in sobbing tears of despair

If God exists, is he there

Life is a mess; the future looks bleak

With compassion, Father God caressed my cheek

Released an ocean of gut-wrenching pain

Tears of sorrow turned into healing rain

God uprooted mountains of guilt and shame

Somehow, I knew I’d never be the same

An unfamiliar whisper descended like a dove

Hard to describe it, but it came from above

Soothing words flowed like a heavenly song

You, my child, will always, always, always belong

Found the love and acceptance for which I long

To Father God, I belonged all along

Prayer

James 5:16 (NLT),  "... The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results."

Lord, forgive me for seeking comfort from everything else, except you. I have wandered through life attempting to fill the void. I’ve tried sex, drugs, alcohol, overeating, social media and other earthly pleasures. I give you the pain, sorrow, abandonment, rejection, fear, guilt, shame, and loneliness associated with feeling like I never belonged or fit in.

I've tried to earn love by becoming who others wanted me to be. I can’t seem to find genuine acceptance, peace, and rest, despite my chameleon efforts. Lord, forgive me for the mess I’ve created. I ask you to take what seems beyond repair and bring wholeness.

I surrender now, completely and humbly. I ask you to come and comfort me. Unveil the true me, who you designed me to be. I stop and attune my ears to you. Nothing else is as important as spending time with my Heavenly Father. Everything else can wait. Speak to me, your child. Amen.

Psalm 27:13 (NIV)

"I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

Psalm 84:1-4 (NLT)

"How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises."
